At a glance
- What it is
- Life insurance for a set period: 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years
- Who it is for
- People with a mortgage, children, or income others depend on
- Price
- Usually the lowest cost per dollar of coverage while the term runs
- After the term
- Coverage ends, renews at a much higher price, or converts to permanent coverage if the policy allows
Match the term to the years the shift is still paying the bills
If the youngest is six and the mortgage has 22 years left, a 20-year term may run out while both still matter. A 30-year term may cost more per month and cover both. Some households ladder two policies. That is arithmetic, not a recommendation. A licensed professional can run the dates against what you can keep paying through a slow overtime month.
How term life insurance works
You choose an amount and a term. If you die during the term, the insurer pays the amount to your beneficiary, generally free of federal income tax. If you outlive the term, the coverage ends; there is no cash value. That simplicity is why term is usually the least expensive way to cover a large need for a defined stretch of years, such as until the mortgage is paid or the children are through school.
Department and union group life often leave with the job
Group life through a fire department, police department, EMS agency, or union is often a set multiple of pay, and it commonly ends or shrinks when you leave, get hurt off the roster, or retire. A personally owned policy is issued to you. Subject to its own terms, it can stay in force after the badge comes off if premiums are paid. That is not a promise that every product works this way, or that you will be approved.
Level term, return of premium and conversion
Level term keeps the premium and the death benefit flat for the whole term. Return-of-premium term refunds premiums if you outlive the term, at a noticeably higher cost. Many term policies include a conversion privilege that lets you switch to a permanent policy without new health questions within a window. Ask what the window is before you buy; it matters if your health changes.
When term is the wrong tool
If the only need is a small final bill at any age, a small permanent policy may fit better than a term that is likely to end first. If you want coverage that can build cash value, that is a different product family with different charges and risks. Do not buy term because a page said first responders “should.”
Common questions
What happens when the term ends if I am still on the job?
Coverage stops, or renews year to year at a much higher price if the policy allows it. Some policies let you convert to permanent coverage before a deadline without new health questions. Ask what that window is before you apply.
Can I keep term if I leave the department?
A personally owned term policy is not automatically cancelled because you change work. You still have to pay the premium and keep the contract in force. Group term through a department or union is the coverage that usually ends with the job.
Is a medical exam required for term life?
Not always. Many carriers offer accelerated underwriting that uses your application answers, prescription history and other records instead of an exam, often up to a set coverage amount. Health questions still apply.
