Life insurance for truck drivers

Not because of the job. Most life insurers do not rate for driving a truck; they rate your health. The issues that come up for drivers are treated sleep apnea, BMI and tobacco. Your DOT medical certification means you already have recent measurements, which can speed no-exam underwriting.

Life insurance for truck drivers

Driving a truck is not itself a rating factor for most life insurers; health is. Because DOT medical certification already checks blood pressure, vision and sleep apnea treatment, many drivers have current records that speed underwriting. Untreated sleep apnea, high BMI and tobacco use are the common issues; treated apnea with CPAP compliance is often insurable at standard rates.

“No exam” does not mean “no health questions”

Most no-exam policies still ask health questions and check your prescription history and, with your permission, records such as a motor-vehicle report. Answers must be accurate; a misstatement discovered within the contestability period (usually two years) can void the policy. Only guaranteed issue policies skip the questions, at a higher price and with a graded period.

Life insurance that protects a business

Key-person coverage pays the business when an owner or essential employee dies. Buy-sell agreements funded with life insurance give surviving owners the cash to buy the deceased owner’s share from the family. Term is common for buy-sell during working years; permanent policies are used when the agreement is meant to last past retirement or to build value. The business, not the family, is usually owner and beneficiary of these policies.

Choosing an amount and a term

A common approach is to add up what you want covered (remaining mortgage, years of income to replace, education, final costs), subtract what you already have (savings, employer coverage, Social Security survivor benefits where they apply), and match the term to the longest obligation. Someone with a 27-year mortgage and a toddler often looks at 30 years; someone five years from paying off the house may look at 10.

Common questions

Does sleep apnea disqualify me?

Not usually. Diagnosed apnea treated with CPAP and documented compliance is commonly insurable at standard rates. Untreated or severe apnea is rated or postponed.

What happens when my term life insurance ends?

Coverage stops, or renews year to year at a much higher price if the policy has a renewal provision. Some policies let you convert to permanent coverage before a deadline without a new medical review.

Is a medical exam required for term life?

Not always. Many carriers offer accelerated underwriting that uses your application answers, prescription history and other records instead of an exam, often up to a set coverage amount. Health questions still apply.

Is the death benefit taxable?

Life insurance proceeds paid because of the insured’s death are generally not included in the beneficiary’s gross income for federal tax purposes. Interest earned on proceeds left with the insurer can be taxable. A tax professional can address your situation.
